This is what has got our collective goat. For once I agree with trolls (there I said it) on Twitter.
I, for one, did not expect this from any Indian, not even the most self deprecating. After all for one there is no reason to give in to such despair, at least not just yet. India still has a few shots at winning medals – we were almost there yesterday with Abhinav Bindra finishing fourth narrowly. He had won a Gold at the 2008 Games — the only Indian till date to win an individual gold medal was humble as he bowed out…
But humility apart, winning and losing are a part of sports and at the Olympics representing your country is a high in itself. Besides the despair is, I believe, misplaced.
There are still a lot of events in which India can expect to win. There is the wrestling contingent with Yogeshwar Dutt leading the pack, there is Sania Nehwal and India’s challenge in badminton. And shooters like Heena Sidhu and Jeetu Rai have an event each to try and wrest a medal for India. Hoping against hope, I’m rooting for the Indian tennis contingent. After all Paes did win in Atlanta 20 years ago and, if childhood memory serves me right, Indians always lifted their game when they played for the country in the Davis Cup.
Of course, the Twitterati have been agog at this tweet with sportspersons, politicians and celebrities sending some rather sharp and nasty responses.
@DeShobhaa that's a tad unfair. You should be proud of your athletes perusing human excellence against the whole world.
@Abhinav_Bindra And do so despite of and in spite of there being no infra & institutional support, and no sporting culture @DeShobhaa
Lots of lament about medal tally, but no lament about lack of fitness culture (which builds a sporting nation) @Abhinav_Bindra@DeShobhaa
Some of them like singer Abhijeet’s however are laced with misogyny, and that is why I have decided not to mention them here.
But undaunted Shobha De continues to tweet on the subject:
My colleague’s status message on FB sums it up the best,”Shobhaa De’s current status: How to Lose Fans and Alienate Friends in 140 characters.”
